Lactose Intolerance is Associated with Changing of Intestinal Villi in Thai People
نویسنده
چکیده
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of lactose intolerance in patients with functional dyspepsia and to document the association of changing in duodenal villi in Thai patients with lactose malabsorption by using breath hydrogen excretion test. Patients and Methods: Functional dyspepsia patients who had no history of milk allergy and underwent gastroduodenoscopy. Two mucosal biopsy specimens were taken from beyond the distal end of the second part of the duodenum. The specimens were carefully orientated and were graded according to the following scheme: group I : finger shaped villi; group II : mixed finger and leaf shaped villi; group III : clubbing or blunting shaped villi. All subjects were tested for lactose malabsorption by breath hydrogen analysis after consuming 50 gram lactose. Breath hydrogen concentration was analyzed in samples collected intermittently by end-expiratory technique. A rise in breath hydrogen concentration of 20 PPM over baseline was considered an evidence of lactose

From 'lactose intolerance' to 'lactose nutrition'.
The concept of lactose intolerance has become embedded in Western medicine and developing economy medicine. It is based on evidence that intestinal lactase activity persists into later childhood and throughout life in only a minority of the world's population, notably northern European-derived populations. These people have the T single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the rs49882359 allele (C/...
متن کاملAdaptation to Lactose in Lactase Non Persistent People: Effects on Intolerance and the Relationship between Dairy Food Consumption and Evalution of Diseases.
Dairy foods contain complex nutrients which interact with the host. Yet, evolution of lactase persistence has divided the human species into those that can or cannot digest lactose in adulthood. Such a ubiquitous trait has differential effects on humanity. The literature is reviewed to explore how the divide affects lactose handling by lactase non persistent persons. There are two basic differe...

The disaccharide lactose is one of the main components of milk. During the digestion, it is hydrolysed by the enzyme ß-galactosidase into glucose and galactose. With the exception of the Caucasian populations the lactase activity decreases in most people in the age of weaning. After the ingestion of large amounts of lactose, symptoms as bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and diarrhea can occu...
متن کاملLactose intolerance in patients with chronic functional diarrhoea: the role of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
BACKGROUND Many studies report a high prevalence of lactose intolerance in patients with functional, gastrointestinal disease. AIM To evaluate the role of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in condition of lactose intolerance and the mechanism by which SIBO may impact lactose tolerance in affected patients. METHODS Consecutive out-patients with chronic functional diarrhoea (CFD) a...
متن کاملLactose intolerance among severely malnourished children with diarrhoea admitted to the nutrition unit, Mulago hospital, Uganda
BACKGROUND Lactose intolerance is a common complication of diarrhoea in infants with malnutrition and a cause of treatment failure. A combination of nutritional injury and infectious insults in severe protein energy malnutrition reduces the capacity of the intestinal mucosa to produce lactase enzyme necessary for the digestion of lactose. The standard management of severe malnutrition involves ...
